INVITED TALKS
- Serge Sharoff,
University of Leedsu:
Analysing similarities and differences between corpora
The notion of comparable corpora rests on our ability to assess the difference between corpora which are claimed to be comparable, but this activity is still art rather than proper science. Here I will discuss attempts at approximating the content of corpora collected from the Web using various methods, also in comparison to traditional corpora, such as the BNC. The procedure for estimating the corpus composition is based on selecting keywords, followed by hard clustering or by building topic models. This can apply to corpora within the same language, e.g. the BNC against various crawled Internet corpora, as well as to corpora in different languages, e.g. webpages collected using the same procedure for English and Russian. I will also discuss the differences in using hard clustering vs topic models.
- prof. dr. Yannis Stylianou,
University of Crete:
Speech Modification
Speech Modifications refers to the various modifications one may apply to
the sound produced by a person, speaking or singing. There is an increasing
demand for high quality Speech Modification methods not only for creating
target or virtual voices, but also to model various effects (e.g., Lombard
effect), synthesize emotions, to make more natural the dialog systems which
use speech synthesis etc.
In this talk I will review the state-of-the-art Speech Modification
methodology showing its limitations in producing good speech quality and its
current challenges. Addressing quality issues of current speech modification
algorithms in conjunction with properties of the speech production and
speech perception systems I will try to pave the way for more natural Speech
Modification algorithms in the future. Facing the challenges, it will allow
Speech Modification systems to be applied in important and versatile areas
of speech technology. Besides speech synthesis, Speech Modification has
other potential applications in areas like entertainment, film, and music
industry, toys, chat rooms and games, dialog systems, security and speaker
individuality for interpreting telephony, high-end hearing aids, vocal
pathology and voice restoration.
