  CLARIN-DARIAH.AT - Weaving the network
  The talk gives an overview of recent developments in Austria regarding CLARIN and DARIAH, the two Digital Humanities research infrastructure consortia. Presented are the manifold related international engagements as well as a new wave of national activities and projects coming to life this year. Special attention will be directed towards semantic technologies, which are becoming the focal point of a very diverse range of research areas in the humanities, raising the question how can HLT support other disciplines coping with the "semantic turn".

  User-driven Language Technology Infrastructure - the Case of CLARIN-PL
  The talk discusses user-driven development in CLARIN-PL, the Polish branch of the European language technology infrastructure for the Humanities and Social Sciences. CLARIN-PL can be used as an exemplar of a bi-directional (i.e. top-down and bottom-up) approach to developing language tools and resources (LTRs). We will overview the state of the Polish basic processing chain, the set of Polish LTRs and typical processing schemes emerging from the development of key applications. We will also discuss the problem of the quality of services offered by language tools that goes much beyond the typical measures used during testing. In conclusion, we will envisage further user needs and LT development for which the 3-4 year construction phase is a good starting point for a fully-fledged infrastructure.

  Machine translation: approaches, applications and challenges
  The talk will give an overview of the current state of machine translation (MT) taking into account both research and industrial points of view: differences and (dis)advantages of the three main approaches (rule-based, statistical and example based), pecularities of spoken language translation, as well as methods and difficulties considering evaluation of generated translations.
