CALL FOR PAPERS
The Information Society is constituted primarily through the exchange
of language data. Programs that utilise knowledge about (the Slovene)
language are useful tools for authors, publishers, language students,
disabled people, etc. The process of Slovenia's integration into the
European Union further extends the need for computer assisted
translation into and from Slovene, for modern and accessible bilingual
dictionaries of the Slovene language, and
effective learning methods for translators and language students in general.
Language Technologies (LT) comprise computational tools and methods
that assist in authoring, exchange, structuring, searching, storage
and translation of language data. The focus of the conference will be
on the usage and development of LT for the Slovene language. As LT
products are typically language specific, Slovenia needs its own
language resources (e.g. corpora and electronic dictionaries) and
language models (e.g. for speech, morphology, tagging) in order
to successfully apply LT.
The conference Language Technologies for the Slovene Language
therefore aims to:
- introduce LT, their use and the state of the art in the field
- give an overview of the state of LT in Slovenia
- discuss plans for the future of LT in Slovenia
The official languages of the conference are Slovene and English.
Unfortunately, parallel translation cannot be provided.
Conference Topics
Our main aim is to bring together researchers and representatives of
companies, organisations and government, who develop, utilise or
plan to use Language Technologies. The conference topics include but are
not limited to:
- authoring tools (e.g. spell checkers, electronic dictionaries)
- speech synthesis and recognition
- the development and standardisation of language resources
(corpora, dictionaries)
- machine (assisted) translation
- tools for searching and browsing of language data
- computer assisted terminology
- machine aided learning methods

The submitted papers should be relevant to the field of language
technology, especially with respect to the current state and future
development goals of LT in Slovenia. Overview
papers on LT research and applications are also welcome.
The papers should be
technical yet accessible to a broader audience.
The papers, written in Slovene or English, should be 4 pages long.
A sample submission is available in Word format on
http://nl.ijs.si/isjt98/sample.doc,
and in Postscript on
http://nl.ijs.si/isjt98/sample.ps.
The authors should send 3 hardcopies of their papers to the following address:
Tomaz Erjavec
Jozef Stefan Institute
Jamova 39
SI-1000 Ljubljana
Slovenia
The deadline for submissions is June 30, 1998.
The papers will be reviewed by the Programme committee. Accepted
papers will be published in the proceedings, which will be handed out
to all the participants of the Conference at the registration
in Cankarjev dom.
The Conference Programme
The conference is divided into three parts:
- An introduction with invited lectures by P. Andersen, EU
representative, and J.P. Chanod from XRCE (Xerox Research Centre
Europe).
These talks will give an overview of the LT field, with respect to its
importance in the European dimension, and its practice at one of
the better known research laboratories in this field.
- The main part of the conference, which will consist of the
presentations of accepted papers.
- The conference will conclude with a discussion,
which will serve as the basis of the overview document prepared by the
Programme committee. This overview will be published in the Journal
Informatica.
Registration fee
The registration fee is 100 US $ for regular participants and 50
US $ for students. The fee covers conference materials and
refreshments during coffee-breaks.
