Linux in Central and Eastern Europe

Help localizing GNU utilities!

GNU utilities need to be localized! If you master your native language, have a reasonable knowledge of English (you are reading this, right?) and are willing to donate some free time, you can participate.

All the message catalogues (the messages program print out while running, e.g. command not found) need to be translated. This project is currently being led by François Pinard from Montreal University, Canada. In the working directory for the translation project (or its European mirror) you can find what has been done already. The project now also has its own Web page.

You will probably also want to subscribe to the translators' mailing list at Linux International. The list address is of the form LL@li.org, where LL is the two-letter ISO 639 two-letter code for the chosen language (Be sure not to confuse the ISO 639 language code with ISO 3166 country code!). The address for subscribing is LL-request@li.org. For example, you can subscribe to the Polish translation list by sending a message with subscribe in the email body to the address pl-request@li.org.
