Summary:
This advanced course on using the
Text Encoding Initiative Guidelines
will concentrate on encoding old texts, in particular how to include
and describe facsimiles in digital editions and how to encode their
various transcriptions in TEI, to produce so called text-critical
editions. In encoding such editions a number of problems need to be
addressed, such as the use of non-standard characters, interlinking of
transcriptions, encoding of the text-critical apparatus, crossing
hierarchies, etc. The course will introduce the TEI Guidelines Version
P5 modules for manuscript description, representation of primary
sources, and critical apparatus, as well as relevant elements of other
modules, and show how to apply them for use on old texts. Lectures are
accompanied by hands-on sessions. The course should enable students to
understand, produce, and use TEI encoded texts comprising facsimiles,
transcriptions and text-critical apparatus.
