- The TEI defines over 400 elements. Without some way of
classifying them it would be unmanageable.
- Elements are classified in two different ways:
- attribute classes are elements which share the same
attributes
- model classes are elements which may appear together in
the content models of other elements
- Classes may themselves be classified: that is, a class may be
defined as a combination of other classes. Subclasses are generally
distinguished semantically.
- Classes are named systematically
